Baron Custom Amps MII 100
Baron Custom Amps is a boutique builder based in Wichita, Kansas. This amp is a MII 100 - EL34 powered 100 watt all tube head with two channels and an A/B setup on the lead channel.
Clean channel is a typical gain/volume/bass/mid/treble setup.
Lead channel is the same, but has a gain one, level one and also a gain two, level two. This allows you to set up the amp in many ways and makes it a three channel amp, even if two channels share an EQ like a Bogner Ecstasy.
Power section has presence and thrust (depth) controls, and a tight or normal switch.
So what's it sound like? This amp can go from modern to pretty good vintage tones as shown by the profiles in this set. It's hard to get a overdriven clean channel tone though - even with the gain cranked, the amp doesn't get much dirt. The Lead channels, however, have to have the gain almost at zero to get a plexi-style grit.
This profile set uses four different microphones - each described below. With 9 different amp settings, that gives a total of 36 profiles.
m81 = Telefunken M81 - this is a newer microphone, and used on guitar cabs and vocals. This mic sounds a lot like the amp 'in the room'. Honest!
pr 20 = Heil PR20 - another newer microphone, same use as the M81. These mics have a great midrange 'crunch' to them and are especially nice for overdriven tones.
i5 = Audix i5 - This microphone was created to compete with the Shure SM57. It's a little more scooped in the mids and with more highs and lows without sounding too grainy.
sm57 = Shure SM57 - The standard guitar cab mic for decades. You will find one of these microphones in every professional studio and many amateur ones too - and onstage. Some newer microphones in my opinion sound better, but the SM57 does have it's own tonality and is always a good choice for profiling or even recording guitar amps. There's a reason why this mic is so popular - it sits great in a mix and is rugged and dependable.
